The Mullum Music Festival
NOV 16-19 2017
10th Anniversary Celebration!

“The street parade kicks off the final day of a festival which shares
a Shire with some of the country's biggest. Bluesfest,
Splendour In The Grass and Falls all run around here, but it's
Mullum Fest which is truly the jewel in this area's crown.”

-Samuel J. Fell, Rolling Stone

From humble beginnings, the picturesque village of Mullumbimby has hosted the Mullum Music Festival (MMF) since its inception in 2008. Nestled amongst the surrounding mountains in the Byron Bay hinterland, this diverse community of just over 3000 people has embraced this very different type of music event. The last decade has seen 600 world-class artists and thousands of people make their way to the festival, not bad for a little festival that started on the night of the electrical storm of the decade.

“The town itself, a country hamlet, is half old farmers, half old hippies and this odd melding has, over time, created a place with its own extremely unique charm – only in a place like this, could a festival like this one go down. It’s a true community, playing host to a true happening, and as has been the case for the past eight years, this year was a hell of a happening indeed. ” - Rolling Stone

Over 10 years MMF has evolved into one of the most successful boutique festivals in the country, proving small isn't just beautiful, it's also economically & environmental sustainable.

No gates. No big headlines. No VIP areas. Basically a ‘No hassle’ festival. A festival where artists and performers mingle, where shows are held in halls, clubs and pubs rather than tents, and instead of driving hours to park in a field and trudge on site, patrons become enmeshed in the spirit of a vibrant village.

“It’s a great feeling returning to the usually sleepy township of Mullumbimby … It’s a beautiful, restful place any time you drop by, but you know that for one weekend a year it’s transformed into a vibrant mecca of music and community, and during that window there’s no better place to be.” - The Music

The town’s array of boutique performance spaces, cafés, parks, buses and streets are filled with some of the world’s finest international musicians alongside the regions incredibly diverse and talented artists. ‘It’s not just about one act, but rather all the performers’ says Festival Director Glenn Wright. Mullum Festival is about the experience. Everyone knows that. It’s all about the people. All of the people. Everyday People!

“Instead of an expansive piece of land with tents and bars, the Mullum Music Festival runs wild in the streets and uses already existing venues – the town itself becomes the festival site...The music rolled into the streets with buskers on each corner, barefoot beauties dancing into the night, and a market place with food and resident circus performers gave a place of rest for the weary punter.” - Rhythms

Artists are routinely seen mingling with the crowd and jumping in as guest performers all over the festival, immersed in the laid-back family atmosphere. Over four magical summer days and nights the festival offer something for every music taste, age and inclination.

“There were workshops, comedians, circus acts, and a street parade. This is so much more than just a music festival, but the artist lineup was stellar. But most of all, the community spirit around this well-oiled machine of a festival was warm and welcoming. With its small-town vibe but big-town sound, you’ll see your favourite acts on stage and then you’ll see them sitting in the crowd enjoying the next set… It brings people together for the love of music and community.” - Rhythms

Mullum has been blessed with the likes of The Church, Ron Sexsmith (CAN), Ajak Kwai (Sth Sudan), Montaigne, Olympia, Tash Sultana, The Basics, Elana Stone, Marlon Williams (NZ), Robert Forster, Pieta Brown (US), Nano Stern (CHILE), Mama Kin, Arte Kanella, Megan Washington, Montaigne, All Our Exes Live In Texas, Sticky Fingers, Emma Donovan & The Putbacks, King Tide, Tinpan Orange, Mojo JuJu, just to name a few...

Suddenly you’re no longer in a small town on the outskirts of human society ... but you’ve been transported to another time and place entirely: here lies the ceaseless beauty of music …the party rages on into the night.
- The Music

Alongside the vibrant musical programming, the festival organisers, Red Square Music, have worked to maintain the individuality, authenticity and integrity of the festival on a number of levels. Not only does the event support the town, its musicians and the national and global music world, but it includes several programs to reinforce and promote sustainability. One of these is The Mullum S.E.E.D. program which involves a series of educational, sustainability focused talks and workshops.

The MMF also continues its commitment to nurturing youth (not only within the music industry, but in a wide range of industries) by offering a unique mentorship program for young musicians and also a range of TED-style talks for youth which fall under the banner of The Youth Training Station (formed in 2014).

In an era where people seek connection and community, Mullum Music Festival strikes the perfect balance, bringing music lovers together to experience a unique and carefully crafted program. Don’t miss the 10th Anniversary summer festivities this November 16th - 19th 2017.

“It all ends far too soon… almost too good to be true and so it’s gone in the blink of an eye.” - Rolling Stone
