About
Once a year the town of Mullumbimby opens her arms to the world and invites them to experience one of the most unique music events in the country. It’s a festival for everybody - with men, women, children and dogs able to participate in this demographically and stylistically inclusive event.
A Brief History
In 2008 the Mullumbimby Civic Hall was refurbished and renovated, enabling the building to once again be host for any kind of community event, and theatrical or musical performance. It also meant that along Dalley Street there was now 4 possible venues. (The Ex-services Club, The Drill Hall and The Bowling Club) with the addition of The Poinciana Café and Lu Lu’s Cafe – Mullum was ready for a music festival.
The 2008 festival opening night very nearly didn't happen. A wild electrical storm nearly halted the proceedings. To the credit of the locals who weren't going to miss out, the show went on, and there were many stories of driving through flooded causeways and going the long way round to avoid fallen gum trees. The night was a success and was talked about excitedly for a long time after.
Over the weekend the usually quiet little town came alive. The weather was beautiful and families from all over arrived to wander between the venues checking out some awesome acts. It was over by 10:00pm on the Sunday and the next day seemed like it was all a dream. The town was left with a feeling of pure joy.
In 2009 an additional 2 venues - The Mullumbimby High School Hall and The Courthouse Hotel were included. This time the Magic Bus made it easier to travel around the festival. In 2010 we initiated the Youth Mentorship program and the Tree Planting, and the newly renovated Byron Region Community College on Gordon Street hosted workshops and films.
The Mullum Music Festival is on again! November 24-27, 2011.
